Super Smash Brothers: Brawl
(Dairantou Smash Brothers X)

Right off the bat, I would like to say to those of you who've been waiting on the edge of your seats: It's worth the wait.

Controls:
Wow. Nintendo's outdone themselves. Adding 4 different ways to play. Ive tried the Horizontal Wii remote, Wii Remote, and Nunchuck, and the old gamecube controller. The button placement on the Wiiremote is different and will take a lot of adjusting, but I seriously suggest you just use your old gamecube controller. I've heard good things about the Classic Controller, but I don't own one, and i don't intend on buying one at the moment. The same as before, Y/X to jump, A/B to attack, C stick to move, Cstick to smash, Dpad to taunt, L to cancel attack, and Z to grapple. So far, I have been unable to successfully wavedash, which I usually can. So, lets hope there won't be any more of that. I'm not going into the Wii Remote's controls, because they're both a waste of my time typing it up, and your time reading. Try it yourself, but let me know when you go back to the GC controller.

Modes:
Just like Melee, there are 2 different ways to do story mode. You have Classic, and Subspace Emissary. I know for a fact that subspace emissary allows co-op, but I haven't checked on classic mode yet. Subspace Emissary will take you through a plethora of side scrolling levels and brawl matches, tied together with cutscenes. Nothing new, but what can you add? Seriously. I haven't tried Online fighting yet, (single layer still. hurr--) but ive been able to sit in and watch some 3 player FFA matches. None of the players were very serious about fighting (I could have beaten them with Ice Climbers), but I didn't see any tournyfags playing, so there's a glimmer of hope for those of you who PLAY games, instead of LIVE them. I've been playing an assload of high level bot training, and fighting with friends. Just the same as Melee, but maybe a pinch slower. There's a small list of new items. None of which really stand out, besides...something that slows down time for your opponents, a spring to make you jump higher, and a nova bomb from Starfox, which will keep you inside the explosion scooping on the damage.

I bet you figured this already, but YES. You CAN turn off the Final Smash item.

Characters:
Well, I'm going to review the new characters that I can while I play the game, so forgive me if I'm jumping the gun.

***NOTE: ALL FIGHTS WERE DONE AGAINST A LEVEL 7 YOSHI ON FINAL DESTINATION***

MetaKnight: Holy shit! This is the fastest, most brutal little bugger i've seen all year. His 'b' move creates a small tornado, around the size of Link's 3rd jump, but doesn't do much damage, or impact the opponent. Good for breaking up a crowd, or hitting someone hanging on an edge. Smash Left/Right/Down is generic as always, however his Up, is 2 quick swipes, that will knock an enemy high into the air, even if their health is still at 0%. His final slash stops everyone from moving, and hits them with a small deal of damage, but sends them flying. I don't think there's a way to avoid this yet, unless you L cancel at the right time. Only problem I have, is his 3rd jump. Jesus H. Christ, this is hard to use correctly. When you do the third jump, the only say you have in your directional movement, is the way you're facing. There is no turning, and if you try, you will fall. Good way to balance this sick creature out.

Diddy: Well, here's a newbie I had low expectations for. Hell I forgot he was on the roster until I had to pick him to do this review. The only thing interesting about this character is his 'down b'. He will drop a banana on the ground. If an enemy runs over it, they will slide about 2 meters, and aren't able to attack during the slide. The little fucker's final smash is annoying for both sides. He will get a jetpack, and fly around the stage, shooting explosives down at the field. This can easily be avoided because the shots aren't very fast. a quick L cancel before it hits the ground, or even jumping can do it. These shots are pretty quick though, so it will seem like a steady stream pounding the stage. His 'b' is a shot that resemble's GaW's bacon toss.

Pit: Very...VERY interesting character. I want to start by talking about his unique jumping. He jumps 4 times, instead of 2, and his 'up b' final jump...isnt actually a jump at all. He will fly to the destination that you aim in, whether it be up, down, left or right. This kid turn on a dime! His attacks are like Metaknight's. They don't do damage, as much as they push the opponent around, especially his 2 hit smash attack. His arrow, with any charge, will fire straight forward, unlike Link's. Lastly, and most important, his final smash. After pressing 'b' to start it, ~10 pipsqueek angels come out of the sky and ram themselves into your opponents, like the Unknown pokemon in Melee, but from all sides, not just 1.

-------
Recently I let my buddy Colin borrow my Wii with the DVD5 copy of Brawl. I got it back with Falco, and Captain Falcon Unlocked. There might be another, but those were the only 2 I noticed. I'll review them soon. Now I'm doing SSE, and I have to say some of the cutscenes make me lol.

More coming soon. And I goddamn well mean it.

The story line...if there is one, in SSE is almost impossible to understand, but it all makes sense. Theres a group of ROBs who apparently have a bomb, which brings some weird toys to life to attack you, so image a 2D kingdom hearts, with way too many platforms, and SSB items. It looks like SSE was the only thing on the 2nt layer of the disc. After about 15 Minutes of playing, my status is only at 10%. SSE is going to suck some time out of your game play, but the amusing cutscenes and plethora of falling trophys/soundtracks help the journey stay fun. For today, I'm playing through using the Wiiremote + Nunchuck attachment. I jumped the gun when I said that the Remote controls suck. They arent as back as thought, and the learning curve for an active player is much worse than I thought, it's a fine way to play. To give you an idea of the length: Ive been playing for 2:36, and im only at 27% on hard

Here's some crappy pictures I took. I the TV im playing on's quality rivals that of a transistor radio under water. I only took afew because... fuck you guys. I just wanna play :D

some other information:

:!: The load times are fairly quick, even for a bootleg disc.
:!: Enemies in SSE have HP bars, and can also be knocked out of the arena.
:!: You get the chance before every round to pick one of two characters to start with. When your first dies, the next will come out as his second stock. If that character dies, I'm guessing it goes back to the first.
:!: Shield Breakers still piss me off
:!: All of the toy enemies look the same, but they take on different base character techniques (Fox's will kick fast, Ike's will jab his sword, ect.)
:!: Run/fire with guns is done perfectly

QUICK EDIT: Holy shit. I take it back. The cutscenes got fucking badass after 30%.

No questions, really. If you say that the gameplay holds up to Melee, I'm happy. Although, I do have one gripe:

Cambio wrote:It's a tournament brawler.

It's a brawler. Not a tournament brawler, nor a party one. Just a brawler with a customizable set of rules that you can tweak to play either way, or any other way you'd like. I'm sorry, but I hate when people look for just one thing, such as "Can this be played in a tournament?". I couldn't care less about how this will affect the tournament scene or how it is perceived by it. If I ever have to play by their rules, I will, but I'm not that kind of player. Again, I'm sorry if you're one of those people, but all I care about is the gameplay, looks, sound and, to a certain extent, balance between the characters (I will admit I liked your bit about individual characters). Please tell us more about those. I just want more objectivity.
I know this mini-rant probably hasn't much to do with the review, but I'm just tired of people saying how I should play and/or enjoy the game, and I just had to get this off my chest. Sorry you had to waste your time reading that.

Also, found this nifty little image. I like it.

How's Snake (when you unlock him)? I've heard some mixed feelings about him.

I guess you were late for E3 2006, weren't you? ;)

I don't know what kind of TV you're using, but how do the graphics look on a TV? Is the framerate locked at 30/60 FPS and did you notice any slowdowns at any time? Why am I being such a graphics whore all of a sudden?

I cant say what the FPS is, but i can asure you it's solid.
You can pick up an object that will slow down everyone in the game to a crawl, except you, and the animation is much more beautiful. turns and twists you never would have noticed became much more clear. This is limited by the hardware obviously, but the game quality is good. no need to fret. another short review tonight.

That's interesting about people most likely wanting to use the Gamecube controller. Knowing me I'll probably stay with the Wiimote and see how I do with that.
